With his furry coat of hair and four-legged gait, one member of the Brentwood Police Department might look a bit different than his peers, but he works just as tirelessly to uphold the law. Our current police dog, Duke, continues a several decade long legacy of diligent service by these loyal, intelligent creatures. Although police canines can be instructed to attack a perpetrator who is attempting to physically harm an officer, such dogs are rarely called on to act in an attack capacity. The primary function of a police service animal is to use his powerful sense of smell to detect illicit drugs and to locate trapped victims at the scene of a severe disaster. Although Duke is generally a docile animal, when called to duty, he takes his job just as seriously as a human officer! |
